USCIS Estimated data on H-1B Visa Holders!

USCIS Estimated data on H-1B Visa Holders!

falo

The H-1B population size has come under the scanner recently with unemployment levels in the US increasing on account of the coronavirus lockdown. Recently, the current administration suspended issuances of new H-1B and other non-immigrant work permits till the end of 2020 in order to reduce unemployment in the United States .

According to the USCIS data, about 583,420 H-1B authorised work permit holders are living in the United States as of September 2019. The USCIS estimate of the H-1B visa holders also includes applicants who have gone on to acquire permanent resident status or moved out of the country.

Also, around 96,798 H-1B visa holders changed to permanent resident status at the end of financial year 2019. USCIS has estimated that the overall authorised to work population in the first two quarters of financial year 2020 (October-March) is expected to be approximately 10% compared to 2019.

Based on the Current Population Survey, the total employment has increased by about 185,000 in the top 20 H-1B occupations between January to May, which accounts for 85% of all H-1B requests. And, the number of unemployed during the same period increased by 194,000, making for only a slight net increase of 9,000 unemployed people.

The USCIS reported that "the order does not remove from the final estimate of the ATW (Authorised to Work) population, aliens who held a valid H-1B visa/status but have abandoned their visa/status (leaving the United States permanently or did not attempt to enter the United States if they are the beneficiary of an approved I-129 petition for new employment). And Nor does it remove from the final estimate aliens with a valid H-1B visa or H-1B non-immigrant status who were denied entry by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the ports of entry.”
